Girl Scouts of Connecticut’s Packing Party Celebrates the Good that Cookies Do!

February 12, 2014

Local Girl Scouts celebrated National Girl Scout Cookie Weekend on Friday, February 7, by participating in a “packing party” at South Church in East Hartford.

In partnership with a local VFW, girls packed Valentine’s care packages of cookies and cards for overseas distribution to troops and for local veterans. More than 80 Girl Scouts built numerous care packages from 720 boxes of cookies, ensuring that these heroes would have a special delivery to put a smile on their face.

These cookies were collected as a part of Girl Scouts of Connecticut’s Gift of Caring project, Cookies for Heroes. The Cookies for Heroes service project allows the public to purchase Girl Scout Cookies in support of Girl Scouting, veterans and active duty military members at home and overseas, as well as local community heroes. Girl Scouts of Connecticut, along with community partners, delivers the cookies.

“National Girl Scout Cookie Weekend is an opportunity for us to show you how our girls, in their own way, make the world a better place,” said Mary Barneby, CEO, Girl Scouts of Connecticut. “Not only does the Cookie Program teach five important skills to girls and allow them to raise funds for their troop activities, the program allows for girls to take their proceeds and give back to the community. The Cookies for Heroes Gift of Caring project is a large part of our Cookie Program, and I’m delighted by the state’s support to let our heroes know we’re thinking of them!”

National Girl Scout Cookie Weekend was celebrated Friday, February 7 – Saturday, February 8, in recognition of the skills learned through the Cookie Program. It was a celebration of the world’s largest girl-led business and the five skills a girl learns from selling cookies: people skills, money management, decision making, business ethics, and goal setting.
