Girl Scouts Learn to “Add It Up” at Travelers in Hartford

April 22, 2013

Twenty four Girl Scouts in grades 6-8 learned about actuarial and math-related careers at The Travelers Companies, Inc., in Hartford, with the help of the Travelers Women in Actuarial and Analytics group.

On Wednesday, April 17, the girls met with the women, some who were video-conferencing from St. Paul, Minnesota, and participated in discussions about the careers available to women in the related fields, including information about school and salary potential. Girls learned how to budget for a trip to Disney World, about risk and insurance, and shared Girl Scout experiences with their new mentors.

The day’s programming was one of many programs offered under Girl Scouts of Connecticut’s STEM initiative, which offers girl-led, girl-centered activities to help develop a girl’s confidence and build her skills in science, technology, engineering, and math. As a part of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience, programs such as these help a girl discover new things about herself and others, connect with new friends and learn about other cultures and places, and to take action by finding ways to make their community or the world a better place.
