Girl Scouts of Connecticut Hosts College Tours

May 8, 2012

Approximately 48 girls from A.I. Prince Technical High School in Hartford toured several colleges in Massachusetts over a two-day weekend from May 4-5, provided by Girl Scouts of Connecticut’s College Pathways program.

The girls visited the campuses of Fitchburg State College, Emerson College, Northeastern University, and Worcester Polytechnic Institute, getting a feel for the different types of campuses and programs. They learned about the college admissions processes, such as the importance of good grades and extracurricular activities to include on a college application and writing a personal essay.

Upcoming trips include two one-day trips to Manchester Community College, Quinnipiac University, UMass Amherst, and Mount Holyoke College. In addition, girls will have the opportunity to participate in College 101, a full weekend at the University of Connecticut with workshops geared to prepare for the collegiate experience and life.

Girl Scouts of Connecticut’s College Pathways program is generously supported by The Travelers Companies, Inc. This program is an out-of-school activity that has meetings on a regular basis, encouraging the educational and career goals of urban Hartford area girls in grades 8 through 12. Activities include helping a girl determine a choice of college and preparing her with practice tests and information about admissions requirements. In addition, College Pathways helps cultivate a girl’s confidence in financial literacy, time management, and other life skills that will set her on the track towards collegiate success and economic self-sufficiency.
