New Funds Will Enhance Girlz R.U.L.E. Program

August 17, 2010

New funds from the Fairfield County Community Foundation Fund for Women and Girls will help Girl Scouts of Connecticut enhance its popular Girlz R.U.L.E. program in Fairfield County. The Girlz R.U.L.E.(Respect, Understand, Lead, Empower) curriculum teaches girls positive skills and techniques to deal with and overcome such relational conflicts as ostracism, spreading rumors, putdowns, name calling, bullying, and other behaviors that often pave the way to violence.

Girl Scouts of Connecticut created Girlz R.U.L.E. seven years ago and it is currently being offered in the Norwalk, Stamford, and Danbury school systems. Girls who have participated in the program come away with a stronger sense of self as well as a greater connection with their peers, increased knowledge of what constitutes healthy relationships, positive ways to resolve conflicts, and a new appreciation of diversity. Girls are then encouraged to educate and inspire their friends and family to follow their positive example.

The new funding from the Fairfield County Community Foundation will be used to enhance and expand the current program. Participants in the updated program will receive important take home materials to help increase and deepen the program's long-term effectiveness by making a stronger connection to the families of the girls served. Additionally, more training materials and equipment kits for facilitators will be created to increase Girl Scouts of Connecticut's ability to offer the program at more sites in Fairfield County. Current program evaluation tools will also be improved through new facilitator pre-evaluation/consultation guidelines and evaluations for the teachers, administrators, and site monitors to report on behavioral changes of the participants.

"We greatly appreciate the generous support from the Fairfield County Community Foundation Fund for Women and Girls," said Jennifer Smith Turner, CEO, Girl Scouts of Connecticut. "Their commitment will further enhance our Girlz R.U.L.E. program and enable us to reach even more girls in Fairfield County. Girls face many challenges today and this program will help them develop the positive relational skills and self-confidence they need to succeed."
